The other day we had a lecture by Matsunami-sensei who is an old man who only two weeks ago completed treatment for stomach cancer. He is a zen abbot from Daitokuji. He is clearly still very weak from chemo or radiation but he is also totally amazing and I kinda love him.
The most amazing thing about him, possibly, was the way he erased the white board when he needed more space. He was extremely deliberate about it, erasing along the lines, then elegantly dodging and dipping here and there to pick up the last stray marks. It looked to me exactly like doing Japanese calligraphy in reverse---
lines of text disappearing into the board through delicate serpentine twists and turns.
I have decided to become a student of Keshido-- The way of erasing.
